Northfield High School Art Students Share Their Work; Display Open Until June 14th

Graduation may be over, but for some Northfield students, their artwork remains featured in the gallery at the Northfield Arts Guild’s downtown location. The Honors Student Art Show features the work of 28 students, most of whom are seniors. High School Art Teacher Kathrine Norrie explained the process for a student to be featured in the gallery:

“They are people who are in a class is called honors art, and that is a class where students have to apply to be in the class and they have to have taken five previous art classes, and achieved a certain grade a d recommendation. So it is no small thing to get into the honors class. And the work that’s in the show right now is the work that they’ve done in just one semester, which is kind of wild.” – Kathrine Norrie, Northfield High School Arts Teacher

As part of the show, approximately half of the students have their work for sale, with the Arts Guild covering the tax cost of each purchase, meaning that the student artists receive 100% of each sale while in the gallery. Norrie noted how the show was a unique one, with a strong partnership with the Arts Guild:

“This is the 20th year of the Northfield High School Honors Art show being at the Arts. So it’s a long tradition, and I’ve been so happy to be there every year and every step.” – Kathrine Norrie, Northfield High School Arts Teacher

Senior students share the artwork that they made in the Honors Art Class.

Senior student Elliot Ness, who is a painter, noted that this was a rare opportunity for students to display their work in a gallery.

“It’s really special, just like getting. I’ve never been able to, like, display my artwork anywhere. It’s mostly just been for me, so it’s fun to be a bit more public about it. And its been kind of like a confidence boost.” – Elliot Ness, Honors Art Student

Senior student Hannah Pape, a painter and writer, noted the strong sense of community amongst the group.

“Personally, the best part about it has just been the awesome friends I’ve made right before this. We went to Miss Norrie’s house, and we had pizza, and we hung out. And it’s just like it’s a big fun family.” – Hannah Pape, Honors Art Student

The Northfield Arts Guild’s Downtown Gallery, located at 304 Division Street, is open Tuesday-Friday, Noon to 5 pm, and Saturdays from 11 am to 4 pm. The Art Students Honor show will be open until June 14th.

Norrie noted the important role that art plays in our community:

“I hope everyone can come out and see this. It’s quite a testimony to how brilliant the people are in our town, and every year, new crops of new artists.” – Kathrine Norrie, Northfield High School Arts Teacher
