The Northfield City Council meets tonight for a work session meeting to review three items. First will be the city’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for 2024. The firm Abdo completed the audit and report. The report includes information on each city’s separate funds, source of revenue, and a comparison of key performance indicators of Northfield to other cities of similar size and cities in Rice County.

Next, the Council will review the 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan and the 5-Year Capital Equipment Plan. Both plans outline how the city will allocate its funds for major infrastructure projects and equipment purchases. Items include everything from the maintenance of City Hall and the park, to snowplows and city trucks. They include smaller items like a $28,000 boiler replacement for the Library to a $440,000 new roof for City Hall.

One item that has received a significant amount of interest recently is the Northfield Community Resource Center (NCRC). The building owned by the city is home to several community institutions, including FiftyNorth, the Community Action Center, and United Way. Among the projects are refurbishing the lockrooms and restrooms, replacing the air handling and chilling units, which are expected to cost over $600,000, and replacing floors and wall paint.
Unlike other city projects, these are funded by the rent charged to the tenants of the building. In order to cover all of the costs, the city had previously discussed, in December, raising the rent to cover the costs.
At work session meetings, no votes are taken by the council; instead, there will be longer presentations and discussions scheduled. Furthermore, since the meeting is a work session, no public comments will be taken at the meeting. However, you can contact your councils via email or the Ecomment option.

Tonights meeting starts at 6pm in the City Council Chambers of the Northfield City Hall.
