Summer Reading Challenge Underway at the Northfield Public Library; Activities & Prizes for Kids, Teens, and Adults

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

Last week was, according to Library Director Natalie Draper, one of the most exciting times of the year for her staff:  the beginning of the summer reading challenge. There are three levels for the challenge, adults, teens, and kids each with their own unique challenges and prizes.

Here’s Emily Lloyd of the Northfield Public Library:

“The idea, generally, is to read for 20 minutes, for a certain number of times.” – Emily Lloyd on the KYMN Morning Show

Each age group completes its Land of 10,000 Reads Passport, which includes its tasks and challenges. As you complete different challenges, you can submit your challenge sheet to the library to receive a limited-edition summer reading button. After completing all of the challenges, you receive the final button, a free book, and a raffle ticket for entry into the grand prize drawing.

The final day to claim a button and submit a raffle ticket is August 15th, and the prize winner will be announced on August 18th.

Lloyd says that they accept a wide range of books, including audiobooks, for the challenge:

“And sometimes we do have people saying, oh, you know, I’m looking for a book at my kids reading level over the summer. Or my kids only want to read graphic novels and I want them to read the classics and stuff. In library land we celebrate what they want to read and that they are taking some time to read.” – Emily Lloyd on the KYMN Morning Show

As part of the reading challenge, several events are scheduled to run throughout the summer. Including:

  • June 20th  at 2 p.m. in Central Park for a special show with Dazzling Dave the Yo-yo Guy.
  • Library Day at the Dundas Dukes game on Sunday, June 22 at 2 p.m.
  • Summer Splashdown on Thursday, July 17 from 6-8 p.m. at Old Memorial Pool. Admission is free!
  • Bruce the Bug Guy on Friday, July 25, at 1 p.m.
