The Northfield School Board adopted its budget for the next School Year on Monday. The School District follows a regular system for its budget process, adopting a budget at the end of the school year, receiving the audit and revising the budget in the winter, and crafting a new budget in the spring. School Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann did note that this budget-writing process was longer and more in-depth than previous ones:

“So you say, Matt, why are you still talking about budgets? We have a process in which we roll out parts of the budget over a series of months, allowing the board to ask questions, debate, and discuss. This year, we had the larger priority-based budget process that started in February. So we have been talking about the budget for months, but this is one of those things where we do with people and not too people.” – Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Hilmann on the KYMN Morning Show

According to the approved general fund budget, 69% of the district’s revenue is expected to come from the state government, and 26% from local property taxes. 82% of the expenses will go to student instruction, while 8.4% goes to buildings, and 3.3% to administration. Salaries and benefits make up the largest portion of the budget at 79.4%.
The approved budget also adopts the funds for Child Nutrition (breakfast and lunch), Community Education, Building Construction, Debt Service, and the Internal Service Fund.
