On May 28, the Northfield City Council approved the city’s 2045 Comprehensive Plan, which outlines the city’s vision for the next 20 years. The plan’s vision is to ensure Northfield remains a welcoming city, providing equitable access to a high quality of life for all residents.

Local advocates from Age Friendly Northfield say they are pleased to see the plan’s focus on equity and the inclusion of youth representatives on the comprehensive plan steering committee.
However, according to CC Linstroth of Age Friendly Northfield, they also note the absence of older adults, specifically those over 65, on the committee. Linstroth observed that the only reference to older adults within the plan was in reference to equitable access. While equity is always a good starting point, the word can often have ambitious interpretations, according to Linstroth.
“We are hoping to see some kind of definition of equity in the plan to acknowledge specific populations, a clearer, more inclusive definition can provide real direction, rather than remaining a vague aspiration” – CC Linstroh of Age Friendly Northfield on KYMN In The Morning
This is especially important as older residents are often overlooked when policy decisions are being made.
“We’ve talked to some of the people at the city about that, but many, many times older people are not as visible as far in documents, as an important demographic to pay attention to,” – CC Linstroh of Age Friendly Northfield on KYMN In The Morning
The group says the city’s support helps them continue their work, and they remain committed to making Northfield a place where residents of all ages can thrive.
For more information on the comprehensive plan and Age Friendly Northfield, residents are encouraged to attend upcoming city meetings or visit the city’s website.
