Today is Juneteenth, the federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the end of slavery. To celebrate the day, the Northfield Public Schools will host an event this morning, starting at 11:30 a.m. Minnesota Department of Agriculture Assistant Commissioner Patrice Bailey will be the main speaker at the event. Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann described the event as perfect for Northfield with lunch and a lecture:
“The keynote speech is going to be about our BIPOC friends, neighbors’ contributions to Minnesota agriculture. So we are an agricultural community and we were brainstorming with our black parent advisory committee, and this name came forward.” – Dr. Matt Hillmann, Northfield Schools Superintendent on KYMN In The Morning
The event is free and open to the public. Lunch from Rose’s Jamaican Kitchen will be provided to the first 100 attendees. The event has been paid for by private donations and grants.
The Juneteenth celebration goes from 11:30am – 1:30pm at the Northfield High School auditorium. Northfield Healthy Community Initiative, Neuger Communications, and the Minnesota Humanities Center sponsor the event.
