The Carleton College Lighten Up Garage Sale gets underway this morning at 7:30 am. The sale consists of items that Carleton students donate at the end of the school year, including a variety of items: clothing, winter apparel, small dorm room furniture, household items, books, bedding, sports equipment, and other fun things!

Erica Zweifel, the Assistant Director of Community Impact at Carleton, said that this is the 22nd year of the fair, and they collect about 50,000 pounds of items each year. She noted that it keeps many items out of landfills and helps local organizations:

“but I think on average we send maybe a half a van load to the Goodwill. We work with the Epilepsy Foundation and disabled veterans with our leftover clothing, ” – Erica Zwiefel, Assistant Community Impact Director at Carleton College on KYMN In The Morning

The sale goes beyond just Carleton, including a partnership with the Community Action Center.

“And so one thing that we started doing a few years ago with lighting up was pulling the Office supplies and the graphing calculators out and donate them to Operation Backpack and then the other thing we started talking about was all the clothing and that’s kind of what spawned Runway Revival.” – Erica Zwiefel, Assistant Community Impact Director at Carleton College on KYMN In The Morning

Zweifel stated that with the number of people the sale brings to Northfield, they were looking for a way to harness that energy and expand to more businesses in town. Working with the CAC to organize the businesses, this year marks the start of the Reclaimed and Reloved Sale, which features 11 locations in Northfield and Dundas and runs through the weekend. Anika Rychner with the CAC shared the positive impact she thought it had for the community:

“I think we had a moment of like all of those shop owners hadn’t ever been together to talk about how they could work together or, you know, support each other in that way. And I. And so to me, that’s the benefit. It’s mutually beneficial.” – Anika Rychner, Senior Director of the CAC, on KYMN In The Morning
