The Northfield High School is set to undergo significant renovations and expansions in the coming years as part of the Reimage project approved by voters last November. One of the largest components of the project involves expanding the athletic facilities, which will include the addition of a second gym to the high school.
The current gym and locker rooms will undergo renovations and cleanup, including improvements to accessibility. The main work will be on the expansion of the second gym. The designer of the project, Sal Bagley, says the new space will be able to be one large room or four smaller spaces:
Bagley said that the new gym would also provide space for the district to host tournaments, multiple Physical Education classes, and host community organizations. Age Friendly Northfield has been one of the users of the high school gym, hosting pickleball in the space on Sundays this past winter. Also included in the new gym will be a walking track.

“Courts, 1,2, and 3 inside the same volume and then put Court 4 in an adjacent and connected but discreet volume right so that you could have the community come and go from for example Court 4 even during the school day but that before and after school you could use it for activities and teams and events so very very connected but I’m having some Security Options and and frankly acoustic options.” – Sal Bagely, Wold Architects, at the 5/12/2025 School Board Meeting

The new gym will be located in the Southwestern portion of the building. The separate activities entrance will remain, but will be slightly moved with the new gym.
