The Dundas Dukes are set to hold a dedication ceremony and celebration of life to honor the team’s legend, Bill Nelson. Nelson passed away this past April, but his impact on the team has been significant, as both a player, a coach, and an active volunteer for over 5 decades. The president of the Dundas Baseball Association, Rory Rice, noted the important impact that Nelson had as a player and leader of the team:

“We instantly wear a better team because of him he eventually took over the role of manager of the team won a couple of state titles under his managerial ship continued to make improvements at the Ballpark through the years as we could afford it we would upgrade our bleachers upgraded our concession stand.” Rory Rice, President of the Dundas Baseball Association (KYMN News Audio File)

Nelson’s work continued after being a player as a supporter of the Dukes, working to improve the ballpark and fundraising.

“He was completely instrumental in getting a charitable gambling through the L&M bar going which brings us year-round Revenue the lights at the field bill was instrumental in bringing us light so we could have a night games here anything about this park that you like.” Rory Rice, President of the Dundas Baseball Association (KYMN News Audio File)

To honor Nelson, the Dukes renamed the ballpark this year to Bill Nelson Field at Memorial Park. As part of tomorrow’s events, the team will formally dedicate the park to Nelson. The Ballpark hosts over 60 games a year, including the Dukes, Northfield Legion, Northfield High School, an over-35 team, the Milltown Outlaws, and Minnesota State High School League Section Playoffs. The park is maintained by a group of volunteers and small seasonal staff and is considered one of the nicest ballparks in the Town Ball Parks of Minnesota.

The dedication and celebration of life will take place at Bill Nelson Field on Saturday at 1pm.
