There is a new motorcycle lane “splitting” law that goes into effect starting tomorrow (7/1) in Minnesota. State motorcycle safety coordinator Jay Bock explains:
“Splitting is a motorcyclist sharing the lane with a motorist at no more than 25 miles per hour. So, if traffic is slowed the motorcyclist can split sharing the lane. Once that motorcycle gets back up to 25, they have to back to a lane assignment.” – Jay Bock, Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Coordinator, Audio courtesy of the Minnesota News Network
Northfield Police Chief Jeff Schroepfer noted that the only area this rule would apply in Northfield is on Highway 3. He asked that everyone remain patient as the new rule is rolled out:
“And that’s my fear with it is is people are going to get frustrated in vehicles of like hey I got to wait for this traffic backup whether it’s crash or destruction or whatever it may be and then to see the motorcycle coming up the middle hopefully we don’t have the incidents of people getting frustrated and swerving and open car doors.” – Jeff Schroepfer, Northfield Police Chief on KYMN In The Morning
Bock noted that last year there were 74 motorcycle facilities in Minnesota with the most in July and August.
