Many people know about the Riverwalk Market Fair, which is each Saturday morning on Bridge Square from spring to fall. However, as part of the weekly fair, the organization offers several programs, one of which is for kids: the Power of Produce. Fair Manager Derek Meyers says that the activities change each week but they are meant to be fun for kids:
“Like 2 weekends ago, it was. We just had a bunch of vegetables and different bags, and kids could reach in and try to figure out what the vegetable was just by feeling it. And they do this activity like, oh, that’s a potato.” – Derek Meyers, Riverwalk Market Fair Manager, on KYMN’s Something I Have Always Wondered About
For completing each activity, kids receive a token worth $5. The token can then be exchanged at any of the vendor booths for $5 of freshly grown produce. Meyers says the goal is part education:

“So then they’re excited that they get to go shopping, they get to go meet a farmer, where they get to learn where food is coming from, and hopefully they’re more willing to try their radishes that they just bought, right, because they were engaged with the program.” – Derek Meyers, Riverwalk Market Fair Manager, on KYMN’s Something I Have Always Wondered About
The Power of Produce is fully funded by internal fundraising by the Riverwalk Market, and staffed by volunteers. You can find the Power of Produce tent near the center of Bridge Square.
The Riverwalk Market Fair continues until October 28th, each Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm (except for the weekend of Defeat of Jesse James Days) and their RMF at Greenvale each 4th Tuesday of the Month through September from 3pm to 6:30pm.
