Nordic Walking Poles Now Available for Checkout at the Library

The Northfield Public Library and Age Friendly Northfield have made a new physical fitness opportunity available to residents: Nordic Walking. Originating as a training routine for cross-country skiers in the summer, Nordic Walking has become a popular exercise for all fitness levels. Library Director Natalie Draper noted that the exercise involves more than just a regular walk:

“Think, when I went into it, I wasn’t quite sure. I thought everything is just walking sticks like for hiking, like for stability, but they’re not. They really are to engage the upper body and the core as you walk.” – Natalie Draper, Northfield’s Library Director on KYMN In The Morning

Draper shared that starting this week, library members can come in and check out a set of Nordic Trekking Poles. She noted that they have enough poles for everyone in the family to participate together:

“We even have a set because there are limits to height adjustability for much shorter stature people, including children, but children might enjoy. You might want to do this with the whole family.” – Natalie Draper, Northfield’s Library Director on KYMN In The Morning

A weekly Nordic Walking group also meets each Tuesday at 9 am. Draper says that the event is largely informal, with no registration required:

“think they’re just kind of slowly getting rolling, but if you wanna kind of talk to other people who are already walking or getting into it with folks, if you’re not quite sure and you want to get some some company out there.” – Natalie Draper, Northfield’s Library Director on KYMN In The Morning

Nordic Trekking poles are now available for check out at the library. The project was a collaboration between the library, Age Friendly Northfield, and Northfield Community Education.
