Shows Open Tonight at the Arts Guild & Paradise Center For the Arts

This weekend is set to be a busy one for local arts and theatre in the Northfield area, with two shows opening tonight: Flora & Ulysses at the Arts Guild and Assassins at the Paradise Center for the Arts.

Flora & Ulysses at the Northfield Arts Guild

Flora & Ulysses is set in 21st-century suburbia. Flora, a self-proclaimed cynic and avid comic book reader, is jolted into action when the neighbor runs over a squirrel with a vacuum cleaner…and that’s where her epic journey starts. From there, it’s a ton of laughs, tender moments, and action!

Here’s Michael Johnson, Executive Director of the Guild:

“And for those that aren’t familiar with that performance, this is actually based on a book by Kate Dicamillo. And a lot of folks have attended her Book openings at Content. She’s a Minnesota-based author, so really grateful to be able to bring that to the stage.” – Michael Johnson, Executive Director of the Northfield Arts Guild, on KYMN In The Morning

KYMN’s Paula Granquist described the show as an amazing one:

“Is an amazing story you were going to be just fall in love with and it’s of course all due to the fabulous imagination of Kate DiCamillo that wrote an enduring and funny and bold story about a superhero squirrel named Ulysses.” – Paula Granquist, Host of ArtZany on KYMN

Assassins at the Paradise Center for the Arts

Over at the Paradise in Faribault, a very different show is set to get underway: Assassins. A multiple Tony Award-winning show by Stephen Sondheim that delves into America’s fascination with celebrity and the extreme lengths some will go to achieve it. This bold musical intertwines the stories of nine individuals linked forever to presidential history as attempted or successful assassins of U.S. presidents. Don’t miss this riveting journey through America’s past, presented with humor, empathy, and insight.

Director of the show Eric Parrish addressed the topic of the show in today’s political climate:

“So I think it actually is kind of a timely topic for today, even though it might seem a little, you know, bizarre or absurd to be talking about things. But, you know, that’s really what the musical Assassins is trying to do.” – Eric Parrish, Director of the show Assassins, on ArtZany

Granquist considered the show to have many elements:

“But it’s a show, as you mentioned. That’s funny and thought-provoking and complicated.” – Paula Granquist, Host of ArtZany on KYMN
