Summer vacation only has a few weeks left for most Minnesota school kids. St. Olaf Education Department Chair Dr. Elizabeth Leer says parents should start thinking about these questions for their children when the school year starts.
“What is my child learning? What is their experience? Do they feel like their fit in in the classroom? Are they part of the community? Do they have good friends at school? Asking those bigger picture questions really get at learning and development instead of just what’s that grade on the report card.”– Dr. Elizabeth Leer, Professor of Education at St. Olaf College, Audio Courtesy of the Minnesota News Network
Leer says other important factors can get lost when parents only concentrate on the grades on the report cards. She stated that now is a good time for both parents and kids to get organized in their schedule for what things will look like once the school year begins:
“For others who really need, who are more anxious about the newness of things, you do want to make that a longer conversation and start earlier. Or the kids who can’t wait to get back and are kind of bored, yeah maybe you want to start rolling those things in earlier.” – Dr. Elizabeth Leer, Professor of Education at St. Olaf College, Audio Courtesy of the Minnesota News Network
Northfield Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann stated that every parent knows their child best and they have to find what works for them; however, he cited one crucial factor:
“The one thing that we know it is so critical as I mentioned is sleep right so do you have a plan you know for your students to get you know a good amount of sleep they’re going to be they’re going to be doing some intellectually challenging tasks during the day there’s the whole social emotional piece of school and just like adults you know when we’re tired we can be cranky right so I think that you know for me the number one thing is the bedtime routine and.” – Dr. Matt Hilmann, Superintendent of Schools, on KYMN In The Morning
There are just 15 days until the start of the school year.
