Memorial Field Set to Get A New Scoreboard in 2026-2027; Advertising Establishes New Revenue Stream For The District

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

It won’t happen this year, but in the 2026-27 school year, Northfield High School’s Memorial Field is set to get a new video scoreboard. The new board would dramatically update the field’s technology and expand what people see. While the School Board approved $400,000 for the board, according to Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann, the board lasts for 20 plus years, far longer than the time needed to pay off the expense.

“And so once the actual scoreboard is. What that does is it gives us this revenue stream. Some of the estimates are over $100,000 a year, right for the remainder of the life of that scoreboard.” – Dr. Matt Hillmann, Superintendent of Northfield Public Schools, on KYMN In The Morning

However, Hillmann says it is not simply about generating new revenue for the district. This past spring, when the School District went through nearly $6 million of budget cuts, one common request was if Northfield could find more ways to stabilize its funding. School districts rely primarily on funding from the state.  He noted advertising would be both traditional signs on the scoreboard and video commercials:

A design of what the scoreboard could look like.

“That money will go back into the activities budget. And the key part of that is everything that we put back into the activities budget from some outside revenue source that helps the general fund … So everything that we get that goes into activities relieves the general fund by a dollar on a dollar for dollar basis. So it helps everybody out.” – Dr. Matt Hillmann, Superintendent of Northfield Public Schools, on KYMN In The Morning

Hillmann noted that this has been an option a few other districts have explored, but that Northfield was on the “leading edge” of these new advertising opportunities. While it’s overall a small part of the district’s budget, Hillmann stated that any dollar can help overall.
