Riverwalk Market Fair Provides Youth the Opportunity to Start Their Own Businesses

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

The Riverwalk Market Fair is again tomorrow, the annual event that draws hundreds of people to shop for fresh food, art, and other vendors. While there are dozens of vendors who operate the different booths and shops, a few each week stand out, and that’s the youth entrepreneurs. Fair Market Manager Derek Meyers noted that the program provides a way for youth to start their own store for a minimal cost:

“There’s maybe a little coaching, but mostly it’s just a really cheap way for youth in our community to see if their idea or their product is something that’s going to be marketable and sellable at the Riverwalk. And so it’s $10.” – Derek Meyers, Riverwalk Market Fair Manager, on KYMN’s Something I Have Always Wondered About

What is also important about the program is that Riverwalk Market provides the tent and helps set up and take down the tent for the youth entrepreneur. Meyers says that when adding up all the costs to start a business at Riverwalk, providing this affordable option can give many youth the opportunity to start and get their first step in their business.

“It’s just a fun thing for kids to do on a Saturday morning and see if they’re art or food or whatever it is they’re doing.”– Derek Meyers, Riverwalk Market Fair Manager, on KYMN’s Something I Have Always Wondered About

Youth entrepreneur tents are flagged each week with a pendant that indicates who they are.

This along with so many other programs that Riverwalks supports, shows how they are much more than just a farmers market and how unique the group is. Will have the previous stories we have done on our website in today’s news.

Riverwalk runs each Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm into October.
