Statement from Northfield Police Department regarding Response to Armed Incident at Greenvale Place Apartments

The following statement was released by the Northfield Police Department late last night:

On Thursday, September 4, 2025, at 7:48pm, Northfield Police Department officers responded to a 911 call from Greenvale Place Apartments. The initial caller provided limited information, stating only, “hurry please.” Moments later, the caller updated dispatch that a person inside the apartment was armed with a gun.

Officers quickly arrived on scene and were able to safely remove the female caller from the apartment.

Officers then learned that two adult males remained inside, including one who was reportedly armed and making threats toward others.

The male suspect with the firearm fled the apartment before officers entered. Officers immediately pursued the suspect on foot as he ran into a heavily wooded area.

Due to the seriousness of the incident, multiple law enforcement agencies responded to assist. Resources included aerial support from the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter and unmanned drones.

Because the suspect’s flight posed a risk to public safety, an emergency alert was issued to residents in the surrounding area, advising them to shelter in place. This alert included the Defeat of Jesse James Days (DJJD) event area, where there were large crowds and events taking place. It is important to note that this incident was not related to DJJD or any of its scheduled events.

After an extended search, the suspect was located but refused to comply, continuing to flee from officers. A Farmington Police Department K9 unit ultimately apprehended the suspect, who was then taken into custody.

No officers, residents, or bystanders were injured during the incident.

The investigation remains active, and charges will be forwarded to the Rice County Attorney’s Office.

The Northfield Police Department wishes to thank the assisting agencies, including the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, Farmington Police Department, and Minnesota State Patrol, for their critical support in safely resolving this incident. We also thank the residents / visitors of Northfield who called in tips during the search — your assistance was vital in helping bring this dangerous situation to a safe conclusion.
