State Highway 19 between Northfield and Interstate 35 is set to undergo two construction projects in a few years, with a project scheduled for next year and a larger overhaul in 2028 planned. A recent open house by the Department of Transportation has helped provide more information on what is planned.
2026 Construction:
In 2026, Highway 19 is set to undergo a Mill and Overlay from Decker Avenue to I-35. With roads designed to last approximately 50 years, a mill and overlay is completed at 25 years to help extend the life of the road. The process is overall cheaper and shorter than an overall reconstruction, which is required at 50 years. During this time, MNDOT staff indicated that there would likely be no detour, rather that Highway 19 would move to a one-lane road.

2028 Construction:
The much larger project is scheduled for 2028, when Highway 19 is set to undergo a full road reconstruction as well as additional improvements. The repairs would stretch from Decker Avenue all the way into Northfield to Highway 3. The additions and enhancements include:
- Adding a continuous left-turn lane.
- Marked Pedestrian Crossings, with flashing beacons.
- Adding bike paths alongside the road.
- Reconfiguring the intersection at Decker Avenue.
- And adding a roundabout at Armstrong Road.

To complete the project, the state would normally use its own funding, but it had received a $25.48 million grant from the Federal Government to complete the project. Feedback is still being collected before the final designs are made. A survey is available online until the end of September.
