Clean River Partners Hosts Cannon River Cleanup Day on Saturday

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

Clean River Partners is hosting its 17th Annual Watershed-Wide Cleanup day of the Cannon River on Saturday. The event runs from 9am to 12pm, with volunteers working in 10 different locations across the Cannon River. Here in Northfield, the two locations where volunteers will gather are the Carleton College Lower Arboretum and Riverside Lions Park. Other volunteer locations include Owatonna, Waterville, Faribault, Cannon Falls, and Red Wing.

Jennifer Tonko, the Executive Director of Clean Rivers, stated that volunteers are what powered the organization to accomplish much of its mission. Here she is  on Earth Day this year:

“We have a volunteer core program where people could go out and work on public lands if they were interested, for example, or you could just. We just had our downstream Film Festival at the end of March, you know, so it’s just events that try to draw attention and bring people together.” – Jennifer Tonko, Executive Director of Clean River Partners, KYMN Earth Day Interview

Listen to the News:

Beyond the cleanup work that Clean Rivers organizes, they also work on reducing pollutants getting to the waterways:

“So like I mentioned before, we do a lot of focusing on what happens on the land, right. Everything that happens on the land shows up in the water. So one of our main things that we do is habitat protection and restoration, working with people who want to permanently protect habitat in this area.” – Jennifer Tonko, Executive Director of Clean River Partners, KYMN Earth Day Interview

The group is also asking that you register in advance. You can do so here. For the event as well, they are selling a one-of-a-kind Be A Friendly Neighbor t-shirt to help support the cleanup day and Clean Rivers. You can find that shirt when you register.
