Last Monday, the Northfield School Board approved the focus areas of the Superintendent for the year. One of those focus areas centers on developing a School-to-Work program. Currently, Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann said that there is a program for Special Education students, but now they are seeking to expand the program to all students. The program would be able to serve Seniors and sometimes Juniors:
“Are able to go to work in the community during the school day. So a lot of times it’s an early release or a late start for them getting to campus or leaving campus. Hillmann says that they were aiming to roll this new program out in the 2026-27 School year, but the work has begun with the Work Force Center and Chamber of Commerce to prepare and build the program. Chamber President Jane Bartho cited some examples of the partnership that already exists between the district and businesses:

Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann Looks To Bring AI Training to Northfield Schools
“For example, nursing assistants, a lot of the trades, the local industries are willing to take those folks right out of the summers between their high school junior year and senior year, and start the training and employ them. The Chamber has helped create tours. We did workforce tours this past year.” – Jane Bartho, President of the Northfield Chamber of Commerce, on KYMN’s Something I Have Always Wondered About
Among the other focus areas for Hillmann this school year are creating AI training for teachers and staff, helping transition the school district after the budget reductions, learning why students open-enroll to other districts, and the experience of BIPOC students in Northfield. Will be covering those areas in other future news stories.
