While winter may be approaching, the Rice County Master Gardeners are still busy wrapping up programs for this year and preparing for next year. Among the preparations are applicants to the program for next year. Coordinator of the Master Gardeners in Rice County, Lorrie Rugg, said that joining the organization was among the best choices she had made in life, as the program offered both fun and educational opportunities:
“I’ve been a Master Gardener since the year 2000. So I’ve been a Master Gardener for almost 25 years. And it’s probably one of the best decisions I ever made.”– Lorrie Rugg, The Program Coordinator for the Master Gardeners in Rice and Steele Counties, KYMN News Interview
New members to the program in their first year are interns and complete several online courses at their own pace through the spring, and then also participate in community service hours.
The Master Gardeners in Rice County host several events a year, including the Gardening Day in March, the Arbor Day Tree Sale, the Gardens at the Rice County Fair, and other educational events. With over 50 participants in the county, Rugg says the goals of the organization revolve around promoting good gardening practices:
“And the main goal of the Master Gardener program is to provide their communities with research-based gardening knowledge. Do we have all the answers? No, but we know through the university how to get those answers.” – Lorrie Rugg, The Program Coordinator for the Master Gardeners in Rice and Steele Counties, KYMN News Interview
