Boys Cross Country Team Positioned Well To Go To State – Raider Highlights

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

Welcome back to this week’s edition of the Raider Sports Highlight, where we take a look at one of the teams or players and what they are up to this season.

The Raider Cross Country Teams were at the University of Minnesota this past weekend for the Griak Invitational. Coach of the Boys Cross Country Team, Janet Smith, says that the race at the U of M is an invitation-only event, and while the girls’ team has attended for several years, this was the first time the boys got to participate, and they wanted to take the opportunity when it arose.

Smith noted that for a cross-country team to qualify for the state tournament, they have to end the season in one of the top two spots. Currently, Smith says the boys’ team is in the second spot, ahead of Pine Lake and behind their long-time rival, Winona. Here she is on KYMN’s Raider Wrap ahead of Saturday’s race:

Listen to the News:

“Well, you know, the Winona Win Hawks are still our nemesis right now. They’ve got a nice squad. They’ve got five top guys that continue to bring their fast legs every meet, and we haven’t been able to beat them yet, but we’re trying to close in on them.” – Janet Smith, Coach of the Raider Boys Cross Country Team on KYMN’s Raider Wrap

With 74 members on the team overall, Smith says they are looking for one or two more team members to help step up and score well for the team. Ahead of Saturday’s race she said that she was optimistic about some of the new and younger members of the team:

“So Asher Engel is our 10th guy on the squad today He is going to have the opportunity to run varsity today. He’s a junior and so he’s really excited and pumped for this opportunity. We’ve got Calvin Dieter is a ninth grader who’s going to be running varsity today. And Dylan Barber, also a new to the sport ninth grader who’s going to be running on varsity today.” – Janet Smith, Coach of the Raider Boys Cross Country Team on KYMN’s Raider Wrap
