A set of road and utility construction projects got underway this week and are set to go through the fall. Affected streets include College, Sumner, Winona, Ames, Maple, and Jefferson Parkway. Specific roads closed during the project will change as the work progresses. Detour signs will be posted directing traffic around the closures.
According to a statement from the City of Northfield, The improvements are part of the Jefferson Parkway Extension, Sandstone Street Construction and Utility Improvements Project. The project includes extending Jefferson Parkway, constructing a new road called Sandstone Street, and constructing water mains from city wells to the site of the future water treatment plant. Construction of a water treatment plant is indefinitely on hold.
The city requests that all motorists always drive with caution, slow down in work zones, and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.

Context:
Some context about the projects, the work is tied into the larger Water Treatment Plant project. In order to have the space to develop the project, the city acquired additional land near the water tower at the end of the Jefferson Parkway. In the agreement to acquire the land, the city agreed to begin development of the area, expanding Jefferson Parkway, regardless of the status of the Water Treatment Project.
Furthermore, the city has continued to explore the option of building a Water Treatment Plant in the future, including saving money for the project, in order to borrow less. However, there is no plan for construction in the immediate future, just work on the roads and utilities in the area.
