The Northfield Police Department recently published its 2024 annual report, sharing data on the past year’s operations and crime rate in Northfield. In 2024, there were 27,987 calls for service, a decrease of nearly 4,000 from the peak in 2022. The leading reason for calls for services was medical assistance and suspicious activity. The average response time was 7.5 minutes.
On the other hand, traffic citations have increased over the last year, with nearly 1,326 citations issued, a rise of over 300 from the prior year. There were 5,045 traffic stops in 2024. Accidents have also continued to rise in Northfield, an 18% increase this year or 318 Accidents in the city.
The overall crime rate in Northfield remained flat, with the top crimes being Theft, Assault, DWI, and Fraud. The last issue, Police Chief Jeff Schroepfer has talked about significantly, citing department data that says Northfield residents have lost $300,000 to fraud since 2022:
Listen to the News:

“So, and that’s once we know about, and that’s knowing dollar amounts. So there is some who don’t even know how much money they lost exactly. So it’s a lot. I mean, there’s a lot of fraud and unfortunately, there’s not a lot you can do about it other than messaging and education saying look out for this or don’t give money to that.” – Jeff Schroepfer, Northfield Police Chief at the 5/6/2025 City Council Meeting
He noted the difficulty of fraud crimes and the many different methods, as well as investigating and prosecuting:
“I think it was just this last week we got phone calls as well. If somebody is receiving unsolicited e-mail saying Please pay this or this bill is due, ” that kind of thing. Give us your credit card number or go to Target, buy gift cards, or wherever it may be. Send us gift cards, Apple gift cards, that kind of thing. So there are so many different frauds out there. Most of them tie back to overseas, so there’s nothing that can be charged on, unfortunately.” – Jeff Schroepfer, Northfield Police Chief at the 5/6/2025 City Council Meeting
Schroepfer estimates that 80% of fraud crimes are committed by people overseas.
Among the department’s other work is 197 cases investigated, 52 alcohol compliance checks, and 27 tobacco compliance checks.
