Dundas City Council Approves Preliminary Tax Levy Increase of 14.09%

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

The Dundas City Council this month approved a 14.09% Preliminary Tax Levy Increase. The preliminary levy sets the maximum amount that the city can collect in taxes; the amount can go down, but not up, when the final approval is voted on in December. For a home valued at $300,000 in Dundas, they would see a $102 increase in taxes a year.

The initial tax levy proposal brought forward earlier in the summer was 19%, City Administrator Jenelle Teppen said they refined the budget to bring it down to 14%:

“It started out at one rate and then, through getting better numbers as time goes by, some refinements came in, which led us to two weeks ago, where they saw it in its final draft form, and they were happy with it.” – Jenelle Teppen, Dundas City Administrator on KYMN In The Morning

Of the 14% levy increase, just 4% is going to city operations, and the remaining 10% is going to Dundas’ share of the ice arena cost. Other items included in the tax increase include:

  • Tower Park Improvements ($75,000)
  • Public Safety –  CAD ($11,000)
  • Sidewalk repairs ($11,000)
  • John Deere Payloader ($40,000)
  • Interfund loan to 602 fund ($23,000)
  • Tool Kat ($42,500)
  • Sidewalk/RR Crossing on West Ave ($60,000)
  • An estimated 10% increase in workers compensation and General Property insurance.

Teppen noted that as they continue through the budget season, they will get a few more final numbers and costs:

“Between now and December 8th, when they adopt the final levy, we will get some of those final numbers. You know, we don’t have health insurance costs for 2026. We don’t have workers’ comp, liability.”  – Jenelle Teppen, Dundas City Administrator on KYMN In The Morning

That said, Teppen stated that she believed there would be few changes between the preliminary levy and the final levy.

“I think we’ll have a few conversations, at least in terms of the general fund levy. But I don’t foresee any changes to that.” – Jenelle Teppen, Dundas City Administrator on KYMN In The Morning

Dundas is scheduled to hold its Truth In Taxation meeting and approve the final Tax Levy and Budget on December 8th.
