Last week, Northfield Mayor Erica Zweifel issued a proclamation declaring today Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Minnesota, along with several other states and cities, has recognized the day that is the Federal Holiday, Columbus Day, instead to recognize Native Americans and their history and culture.
Zweifel stated that the Proclamations serve as opportunities for expressions of community values:
“And so this is a way to honor the rich traditions and diverse cultures and enduring contributions of indigenous people.” – Erica Zweifel, Northfield Mayor on KYMN In The Morning
In a letter to the city, Zweifel stated that: “Northfield’s recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day reflects our commitment to truth-telling, inclusion, and respect for all peoples and cultures. This proclamation affirms that our community values acknowledging the Dakota Nation and other Indigenous peoples who have shaped our region, and that we honor their ongoing contributions.”
