Northfield Public Library Seeks Design Input on How To Better Use Space Around the Library

Some of the different designs made by the Northfield Public Library.

The Northfield Public Library has been working recently on designs and renovation improvements to the grounds around the library. Natalie Draper, the Library Director, stated that they have been dealing with erosion, tree loss, and other landscaping issues.

“So there are some challenges to that, but I think we can find some creative solutions and actually activate more of the space. The library occupies a pretty big site, but a lot of it’s underutilized.” – Natalie Draper, Northfield Library Director on KYMN In The Morning

Draper shared that the library had secured a grant to hire architects to collect feedback and make several designs that would improve the outside space. Additionally, each design has unique elements or features that would expand art or programming space at the library.

Listen to the News:

“We’re looking at activating spaces where we can get natural shade on the site. We’re struggling to maintain shaded places just because the trees haven’t really been doing that well. We’ll also be bringing in some artwork and other things.” – Natalie Draper, Northfield Library Director on KYMN In The Morning

Some of the highlights of the design:

  • Expanding the accessibility of the spaces for all
  • Amphitheater and other seating along Division St as a welcoming connection to downtown
  • Stormwater treatment and collection demonstration
  • Children’s programs (play features, patio, etc.)
  • Improved shade but no shade structure in front of the Atrium
  • Better car and bike parking

Currently on display in the Library Atrium are several large poster boards displaying each of the different designs. It’s an opportunity for the public to learn more about the design and leave comments. Draper shared that the boards will be up in the library for much of October and that people can leave their thoughts on their favorite designs or items to consider for the future.

“They’re asking for people to share: what’s their favorite. Why that is, what might be missing from that, from either plan, or maybe if there’s some combination of things that they like, other questions that people have, I’ll take any input that I can get from the community.” – Natalie Draper, Northfield Library Director on KYMN In The Morning
