Today we are excited to announce a partnership between KYMN Radio and Olaf Messenger, the student newspaper at St. Olaf College. KYMN listeners will recall hearing Maya during the newscasts and interviews this past spring and summer, while she worked as an intern at the station. As a student, she serves as the Executive Editor of the Messenger and sees this as an opportunity for students to learn:
“At St. Olaf we have no formal student journalism program or any way to really get that hands-on experience that is needed to be a good reporter. So seeing and experiencing what I did over the summer at KYMN, I am so excited to expand these resources to students at the Olaf Messenger and really engage in our local community.” – Maya Betti, Executive Editor of the Olaf Messenger & Former KYMN News Intern
Listen to the News:
For the past month, I’ve been working with 8 students, discussing radio news reporting and teaching them various technologies and equipment. Starting next Friday, KYMN and the Messenger will air a weekly 15-minute podcast, Headlines from the Hill, covering news from St. Olaf. The show will air on KYMN on Fridays after the 6:30am and 12 o’clock news, and will be available wherever you get your podcasts. However, we will have a shorter preview segment available as a podcast tomorrow.
Starting in the Spring Semester, students will be working on individual beats and stories, helping expand KYMN News coverage and capacity to follow more stories of interest. In particular, this partnership enables more focused, in-depth stories. As a daily reporter, I am limited in my capacity to research larger stories and issues in Northfield. With additional help, now we can gather more interviews, points of view, and conversations in town.
One of those students who is particularly interested already in one news beat is Executive Editor Kenzie Nguyen, with her being interested in a series on housing stories:
“I have always been really interested in housing, whether that was at St. Olaf or just in Northfield in general…. And so I dug deep into that, and there were just so many conversations to be had when it comes to affordable options for residents in Northfield and also just having housing period in Northfield.” – Kenzie Nyguyen, Executive Editor of the Olaf Messenger
Will be posting more details about these programs on our website and social media. You can find the Olaf Messenger online at: https://olafmessenger.com/
