Safety Reminders for Halloween

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

With Halloween today and kids out trick-or-treating this evening, officials are reminding everyone to be safe on the fun night. Northfield Police Chief Jeff Schroepfer stated that one of his main concerns was about safety for everyone while walking around:

“For the parents or the kids themselves of just having something on their costume to be reflective, to kind of stick out, whether it’s glow sticks or reflectivity or just a light-colored costume, anything like that, to get drivers’ attention and others’ attention.” – Jeff Schroepfer, Northfield Police Chief on KYMN In The Morning

Listen to the News:

Schropefer said that it is extra important on Halloween night because kids often forget simple safety rules:

“And I look at my own kids where they’ll, they get so excited about the candy, they’ll run from house to house, but they’ll sprint across the street without even looking.”  – Jeff Schroepfer, Northfield Police Chief on KYMN In The Morning

For drivers tonight, the Police Chief recommended that everyone slow down and pay extra close attention to what’s on the road:

“Just slowing down, take your time, be aware that there are kids everywhere and they’re not necessarily going to be crossing at the crosswalk.” – Jeff Schroepfer, Northfield Police Chief on KYMN In The Morning

Lastly, he noted that, in particular, with Halloween on a Friday, for adults, they have a plan for a safe way home if attending a party:

“I mentioned the kids because that’s the biggest time of concern, but like you said, it’s on a Friday, so we get later into Friday. If the adults are now out and having drinks and going to Halloween parties as well, just remembering to have that sober driver or that ride home, and just the same goes there, it’s the crossing the street and drivers being aware of the extra foot traffic.” – Jeff Schroepfer, Northfield Police Chief on KYMN In The Morning

However, Schroepfer wished everyone a happy and fun time this evening.
