Portions of Jefferson Parkway Set To Be Closed

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

Parts of Jefferson Parkway between Sibley View Lane and Michigan Drive, public sidewalk and bike path will be closed this week while crews work on the water utility lines.

Closures include eastbound Jefferson Parkway between Maple Street and Sibley View Lane, Lake Drive and Prairie Street and Michigan Drive and Erie Drive; and westbound Jefferson Parkway between Maple Street and Bunker Drive.

This closure is near Spring Creek Elementary School and may affect some students’ regular routes to school. Detour signs will be posted directing vehicle traffic to Division Street, Woodley Street, Maple Street and Spring Creek Road/Hall Avenue.

Listen to the News:

This improvement is part of the Jefferson Parkway Extension, Sandstone Street Construction and Utility Improvements Project. The project includes extending Jefferson Parkway, constructing a new road called Sandstone Street and constructing water mains from city wells to the site of the future water treatment plant. Construction of a water treatment plant is indefinitely on hold.

Context:

Some context about the projects, the work is tied into the larger Water Treatment Plant project. In order to have the space to develop the project, the city acquired additional land near the water tower at the end of the Jefferson Parkway. In the agreement to acquire the land, the city agreed to begin development of the area, expanding Jefferson Parkway, regardless of the status of the Water Treatment Project.

Furthermore, the city has continued to explore the option of building a Water Treatment Plant in the future. However, there is no plan for construction in the immediate future, just work on the roads and utilities in the area.
