Truth in Taxation statements are now in the mail to all property owners in Rice County. The form provides an estimate of the property taxes you will pay in 2026 to each of the local governments: the county, school district, and city/township. The form also states the market value of your property and how it has changed from the previous year.
Each of the estimates is based on the maximum possible tax increase approved by local governments at the end of September, in this case:
- City of Northfield 10.2% Preliminary Levy Increase (note: the City Council will be considering a final level of 9.9%).
- City of Dundas 14.09% Preliminary Levy Increase
- Northfield School District 0.98% Preliminary Levy Decrease
- Rice County 8.7% Preliminary Levy Increase
Here’s Ben Martig, Northfield City Administrator, helping explain the form:
Listen to the News:
“Then says everybody’s going to pay their fair share based on the rate of taxes they’re paying that the state sets and the value that our county assessors determine or the evaluation. You can look at your tax statements and see how the value of your land and building changed from last year to next year, or this year to next year.” – Ben Martig, Northfield City Administrator, KYMN News Special: A Guide to the Northfield Budget.
The statements also list the time, date, and location of required Truth in Taxation meetings for each taxing authority. All of which are held early in December. These meetings provide taxpayers an opportunity to speak directly to elected officials who approve the levies and budgets, and to offer comments on how tax dollars are being spent. However, it is always wise to make your voice heard as soon as possible, as the budget and taxes levied are being discussed in November, and fewer significant changes can be made at the last minute.
While Rice County Assessor’s Office staff will be available during the county’s Dec. 11 Truth in Taxation meeting, the annual opportunity for property owners to challenge their estimated market value took place in June.
Find more information on our website about each of the local governments’ budgets. Starting on Monday, will be having a 5-part series of short stories to help explain the City of Northfield’s budget.
