A man who has lived in Northfield for more than ten years and was recently detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, will be deported to Mexico.
According to multiple news outlets, including Minnesota Public Radio, Adan Nunez Gonzalez went before Immigration Judge Monte Miller on Monday asking for asylum. Nunez Gonzalez told the judge that returning him to his home would put him in danger because he has been targeted for recruitment by a gang. Miller, however, ruled that current laws do not offer protection for the reason of gang recruitment. Nunez was denied asylum with no chance for appeal, and will be returned to his home country.
Nunez Gonzalez, who was detained by ICE on November 11th, has four children in Northfield, and has been in the US since 2014. The case brought against him by the Immigration department stated, according to MPR, that he “has illegally reentered the country after previous removals. They also say Nunez Gonzalez had an arrest for public intoxication and a warrant for failing to appear in criminal court.”
This is a developing story, and while little information has been released to local news sources, KYMN News will work to keep the Greater Northfield Community updated.
