Tomorrow, Carleton College will once again host their annual Craft Fair and Custodial Bake Sale. This long-standing event welcomes the entire Northfield community to shop the wares of Carleton staff and community members. A wide variety of hand-crafted items and baked goods will be available for purchase.
The craft portion of the fair began in 1982, when then-Carleton employee Loretta Springer organized it as an opportunity for Carleton staff to showcase and sell homemade items. Nine years later custodian Pat Flynn organized the bake sale portion of the fair to help fund the Carleton Custodial Scholarship Fund.
One of the organizers of this year’s fair, Yolanda Helgeson, stated that the scholarship started with the custodians donating part of their paychecks to form the scholarship fund, before evolving into the fundraiser:
Listen to the News:
“So Pat came up with that idea she already had children at the time in college, and understanding, like, the need from low-income families to send kids to college. So she started brainstorming and chatting with other custodians, and they came up with this great idea to, like, what about if we bake and sell our stuff?” – Yolanda Helgoson, Organizer of the Carleton Craft & Bake Sale on KYMN In The Morning
Vendors each pay a $40 fee to be part of the fair, with all of the funds going towards scholarships. Another one of the organizers, Denise Gillen noted how the fair has grown over the years:
“We started with just a handful of tables and now we have upwards of, I think this year we have 52 different vendors coming to the sale.” – Denise Gillen, Organizer of the Carleton Craft & Bake Sale on KYMN In The Morning
The Craft Fair and Bake Sale starts Friday at 8am and goes until 2pm at the Weitz Center for Creativity. The event is open to everyone.
