Dundas City Council Set to Approve Budget & 14% Tax Increase at Tonight’s Truth in Taxation Meeting

A summary of the tax levy by the different funds in Dundas compared between 2025 and 2026.

The Dundas City Council meets tonight for a regular meeting. The council will be considering a 14.09% increase in the tax levy and an overall $251,958 increase in the budget. The average home valued at $300,000 would be $102 in additional taxes per year.

Of the 14% levy increase, just 4% is going to city operations, and the remaining 10% is going to Dundas’ share of the ice arena cost. The new Ice Arena project is a partnership between the City of Northfield, City of Dundas, Northfield Public Schools, and Northfield Hockey Association. The Hockey Association donated $3.6 million and the land for the project, the school district agreed to a long-term lease of the facility, and the two cities each agreed to pay a proportional share of the arena’s construction cost.

While the arena is not in Dundas proper, City Administrator Jenelle Teppan stated that it would benefit Dundas and the city’s residents:

“We have the same goals as Northfield and the school district have in terms of providing activities for school children. We want to keep kids in the district, and there are a number of hockey players and hockey families in Dundas that play for the Northfield Hockey Association.” – Jenelle Teppen, Dundas City Administrator

Other items included in the tax increase include:

  • Tower Park Improvements ($75,000)
  • Public Safety –  CAD ($11,000)
  • Sidewalk repairs ($11,000)
  • John Deere Payloader ($40,000)
  • Interfund loan to 602 fund ($23,000)
  • Tool Kat ($42,500)
  • Sidewalk/RR Crossing on West Ave ($60,000)
  • An estimated 10% increase in workers’ compensation and General Property insurance.

The city’s overall tax levy is $2 million. Within the general fund, the Police Department accounts for the largest share of expenses at 28%, followed by General Government at 21%, Highways and Roads at 13%, Transfers at 10%, and Parks and Fire Departments at 6% each.

The City Council will also approve the Economic Development Authority levy of $54,417, a slight increase from the previous year.

The Dundas City Council meets tonight at 7pm in the Council Chambers of the Dundas City Hall.
