New art is up in Downtown Northfield at the former site of the Archer House, with banners going up around the fence at the site. Overall, the piece is 170 feet long, comprising 17 smaller murals combined into one larger artwork. Northfield Library Director Natalie Draper said the murals depict a bookshelf featuring works by Northfield authors, with over 100 titles spanning fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and children’s books.
“And we really didn’t have to go back far for most of the authors; most of them are pretty current, which is really cool. Like, if you read that whole shelf, you would be an extremely well-read person, only read and well-rounded person.” – Natalie Draper, Northfield Library Director.
Listen to the News:
The murals were created by local artist Rocky Casillas Aguirre, who the Library commissioned to bring life to the downtown space. It’s not the first time Aguirre has partnered with the library; one of the four library card designs was his as well. Draper said the project was a last-minute one, with library staff making the list of books and organizing the project, while Aguirre created the design and carried out the work.
“And we pulled together a reading list. for the book list and then gave it to Rocky and he dreamed up this bookshelf for us.” – Natalie Draper, Northfield Library Director, on KYMN In The Morning

Several magical and mystical characters from Aguries’ books appear on the downtown mural, adding to the space’s fun and creativity. Here’s Agurrie this summer talking about the main character in the book, Twitch, the magical campfire:
“He’s the main character in most of my stories and represents that little kid in all of us. He goes on this really big self-discovery adventure with a mystical hot dog who is his guru. Yeah, and he learns something new about himself and gains a different superpower, things that we normally don’t view as superpowers, but like, patience, compassion, things like that.” – Rocky Casillas Aguirre, Local Artist, KYMN News Interview
