Small Businesses Rely on Community Support This Holiday Season

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

With Winter Walk today, it’s one of the most important days of the year for Small Businesses in town. Amy Peterson, owner of The Measuring Cup and Monarch Gift Store, said that the holiday shopping season can make or break the year for most local businesses:

“This is our biggest season of the year for the income that we bring in and for carrying us through some of those slower months, January, February, March, where people might not be out shopping as much. So this November, December really can make or break a small business.” – Amy Peterson, Owner of The Measuring Cup and Monarch Gift Store, KYMN News Interview

Peterson noted that supporting small businesses means keeping dollars in the local area. According to one study $68 of every $100 spent locally stays in the community, compared to less than $14 at national chains. Other benefits that Peterson cited about local businesses were that they hired locally and paid local taxes:

“And we also, most of the people who work here, myself included, we all live in Northfield.  So the money we make here, we also go spend in our town. So it’s good for our whole community. And I personally love all the unique stores and restaurants that we have in our town.” – Amy Peterson, Owner of The Measuring Cup and Monarch Gift Store, KYMN News Interview

So far this season, Peterson said it’s been active; however, she noted that inclement weather on several days, including Small Business Saturday, slowed what would typically be a busy day. However, despite the bad weather, Peterson expressed her thanks, noting that it was about the community connection that made shopping locally so special to her:

“And it makes a huge difference for us and for, I know, all the other shops in town that have that support and have those smiling faces where you really get to know the people, it’s about the relationship more than anything, and I feel like we can offer that. That’s something online won’t be able to do.” – Amy Peterson, Owner of The Measuring Cup and Monarch Gift Store, KYMN News Interview
