The Northfield City Council will convene for a regular meeting tonight in the Council Chambers at Northfield City Hall with a full agenda that includes park improvements and a proposal to support a local sales tax for major capital projects.
The meeting will begin with an oath of office ceremony for Officer Fernando Sanchez-Elioza, who recently joined the Northfield Police Department.
On the regular agenda, council members will consider two significant park projects. The first item seeks approval of plans and specifications for playground improvements at Dresden Hill Park and authorization to solicit bids. The proposed upgrades aim to enhance accessibility and modernize equipment for families in the neighborhood. The second item involves similar action for Central Park, where plans include site improvements and new playground features. The Historic Preservation Commission has reviewed the proposal and issued a resolution of support, ensuring that updates align with the park’s historic character.
Another major discussion will center on a resolution requesting authority to impose a local sales tax. If approved by the legislature and voters, the tax would fund specific capital improvements that provide regional benefits. The resolution also outlines the duration of the tax, the revenue target, and authorizes the city to issue bonds backed by sales tax proceeds. City leaders say the measure could help finance long-term projects without relying solely on property taxes.
As always, the public will have an opportunity to comment on these agenda items. Individuals who pre-register may speak for up to two minutes, and others will be invited to share their input after the sign-up list is complete. Questions can be submitted in writing for follow-up.
The meeting will conclude with an update from Northfield City Administrator Ben Martig, including information on Rice County transportation initiatives.
The meeting is set to begin at 6pm, and will be streamed online for those unable to attend in person.
