The Rice County Historical Society has unveiled a unique community engagement initiative called the “Wish Wall,” inviting residents to share their hopes for the future of the United States as the nation marks its 250th anniversary.
The project, developed in partnership with Carleton College’s History Beyond the Walls class, asks a simple but powerful question: What do you wish for America as it enters its 250th year? Participants can write their wishes—whether for peace, unity, innovation, or even lighthearted dreams—on cards and post them on designated boards.
RCHS Outreach and Education Director Kiran Lowenstein said the project is meant to hear from not just as many people as possible, but people from different age groups and walks of life.
“This is about connecting people with history in a meaningful way. We want to hear from everyone—youth, seniors, and all community members—about their vision for the country’s future.”
Eight Wish Wall sites have been installed across Rice County, including Buckham Library, Buckham West, and Oasis 55021 in Faribault; Carleton College Library, 50 North Senior Center, the Key Youth Center, and Northfield Public Library in Northfield; and Lonsdale Public Library. The boards will remain up through the end of February.
The idea originated with Made by Us, a national organization encouraging younger generations to engage with history. RCHS Executive Director Dave Nichols said the project aligns perfectly with the society’s mission and its own milestone:
“It’s not just America’s 250th—it’s our 100th anniversary too. We’re excited to preserve these wishes as part of a special collection for future generations.”
Students from Carleton will analyze the submissions to identify common themes, which will be shared on RCHS social media in March. Community members are encouraged to visit a Wish Wall, post their thoughts, and tag RCHS on Facebook or Instagram.
The next Wish Wall introduction will be on Thursday, January 29th at the Carleton College Library. The event is scheduled to begin at noon.
