The Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce has named Amy Peterson, owner of Monarch Gift Shop and The Measuring Cup, its 2026 Business Person of the Year, recognizing a leader whose work is rooted as much in community connection as it is in retail success.
For Peterson, the honor was both surprising and deeply meaningful. “I was a very young teen mom. I don’t have a college degree, so I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d own one business, let alone two,” she reflected. The award, she said, feels like a culmination of years of learning, risk‑taking, and building relationships in downtown Northfield.
Peterson’s path into business ownership began as a family endeavor. After her parents moved to Northfield, her mother—a natural entrepreneur—noticed a small gift shop for sale. The family brainstormed ideas together, eventually launching what is now Monarch. Years later, they did the same when imagining what else downtown needed, leading to The Measuring Cup, a kitchen store built on quality, practical tools and a shared family love of cooking.
Quality, Peterson says, is foundational. Both stores prioritize well‑made products that last, whether it’s a skillet, a gemstone necklace, or a locally crafted bath item. But her deeper philosophy is about creating welcoming, calming spaces where people feel cared for. “It’s always been important to me that anyone can walk in and feel listened to, like it’s a break from the stress of day‑to‑day life,” she said.
Equally central to her work is supporting Northfield’s small‑business ecosystem. A longtime Chamber board member, Peterson is committed to helping new entrepreneurs navigate the complexities of opening and sustaining a business—from regulations to staffing to simply staying encouraged. “It’s more than just having a great idea. I’m always happy to talk and brainstorm,” she said.
Running two shops means long hours a nd constant problem‑solving, but Peterson insists the joy outweighs the challenges. “I love my job,” she said. “Northfield is a special place. I’m thankful I get to live here—and be part of what makes downtown vibrant.”
