Faribault authorities say a tense situation unfolded late Saturday morning after a reported weapons violation prompted a large police and SWAT response in a residential neighborhood.
According to the Faribault Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 10:40 am on Saturday, February 14, to the 10 block of Division Street West following a report that a firearm had been discharged inside an apartment. When officers arrived, they discovered evidence indicating that a bullet fired from within one unit had traveled into an adjacent apartment. Authorities did not report any injuries.
Police attempted to make contact with the person or people believed to be inside the apartment where the shot originated. Despite signs that the unit was occupied, officers were unable to make contact. Given the circumstances and uncertainty surrounding the occupants’ intentions, the department activated South Metro SWAT (SMS), a regional team in which Faribault officers participate.
As SWAT personnel responded, Division Street was temporarily closed to traffic, and an Everbridge emergency alert was issued to residents in the immediate area. Detectives worked simultaneously to prepare a search warrant that would allow officers to enter the apartment if necessary.
By early afternoon, SWAT negotiators successfully reached two individuals inside the unit by phone. At approximately 1:30 p.m., both occupants were detained without incident as tactical officers secured the apartment.
Police say the immediate threat to public safety has been resolved, but the case remains under active investigation. The department noted that no additional information will be released until Tuesday as investigators continue to review evidence and determine what led to the gunshot.
Residents were thanked for their cooperation during the incident, which authorities acknowledged caused temporary disruption but was handled with caution to ensure community safety.
