The search for the next leader of Northfield Public Schools is officially underway following Superintendent Matt Hillmann’s announcement that he will leave the district at the end of the school year.
At Monday night’s meeting, the Northfield School Board voted to contract with the Minnesota School Boards Association to conduct the superintendent search. The process will include development of a leadership profile and opportunities for community input through surveys and direct feedback to the board. Board members indicated they hope to have a new superintendent in place by early May.
Hillmann encouraged community members to take part in the process and to reach out to qualified candidates.
“This is a great place to lead,” he said. “If you know someone with a Minnesota superintendent license who would fit our community, encourage them to apply.”
Hillmann announced February 11 that he will “step forward,” as he describes it, to become executive director of the Minnesota Association of School Administrators, a statewide membership organization representing more than 700 school leaders, including superintendents and central office administrators.
Hillmann has been active in the organization for years and said the new role will allow him to advocate for students across Minnesota, particularly at the Legislature.
“I’m really grateful to have a chance to do some really good work for kids on the state level,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to leverage my best skills and influence education statewide.”
Still, he acknowledged the move closes a meaningful chapter. Hillmann has worked in Northfield for 16 years, including the last decade as superintendent. He described the district as a “major leagues” environment with high expectations and strong community support.
“It’s been a real privilege,” he said. “We have fantastic kids, amazing teachers, outstanding support staff and leadership. This community expects you to bring your A game every day, and that’s exactly how it should be.”
Hillmann also reflected on Northfield’s historic ties to MASA, noting he will be the second executive director from Northfield, following Dr. Charlie Kyte. As he prepares for the transition, Hillmann said he remains focused on finishing the school year strong and supporting a smooth handoff to his successor.
