City trees and future budgets will take center stage at tonight’s Council work session

By Rich Larson

The Northfield City Council will turn its attention to trees and long‑range financial planning when it holds a work session tonight, according to the published agenda.

A major portion of the session is devoted to a discussion of tree‑related policies and information. Council members are scheduled to receive a presentation on the 2026 Tree Canopy of Northfield, which is expected to provide an overview of the city’s urban forest and the role trees play in neighborhoods, streets, and public spaces. The work session format allows councilors to ask questions and explore policy implications without taking formal action.

Supporting materials for the discussion include the city’s Infrastructure Tree Replacement Policy and the Boulevard Tree Maintenance Policy. Together, those documents outline how trees are selected, replaced, and maintained when public infrastructure projects occur and how responsibilities are shared between the city and property owners along boulevards. Council members will also review relevant sections of City Code Chapter 34, Article 3.5, which covers landscape, screening, and buffering standards. The combined discussion is intended to give the council a clearer, more comprehensive picture of how existing rules and practices fit together as Northfield plans for future growth and sustainability.

The second agenda item shifts the focus from environmental policy to city finances. The council will review the proposed 2027–2028 budget calendar and points of emphasis. Materials include the draft budget calendar, links to the 2026 budget presented in the Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Application format, recent financial audits, and a budget information hub for the upcoming two‑year cycle.

By reviewing the calendar and priorities early, council members can signal areas they want staff to emphasize as the next biennial budget is developed. As a work session, the meeting is designed for discussion and direction‑setting rather than votes, laying the groundwork for future policy and budget decisions that will come before the council later this year.

As always, the City Council and the Northfield City Staff are eager to hear the opinions of the public on any matter, whether the subject is on the Council agenda or not. The meeting tonight is a work session, so the Council will not hear from the public. However, those who do wish to make a point, air an opinion or ask a question can email their councilor directly or make use of the eComment function which can be found in the “Agendas” section of the city website.

Tonight’s meeting will begin at 6pm.
