The Northfield City Council will convene tonight for a wide‑ranging meeting that blends ceremonial moments with significant policy decisions affecting growth, infrastructure and local businesses.
The evening will open with an oath of office ceremony for Northfield Police Department Officer Joshua Ortiz, welcoming the newest officer to the force before the council turns to routine business on the consent agenda. Councilors are expected to approve recent meeting minutes, authorize more than $2.9 million in disbursements, confirm mayoral appointments to boards and commissions, and act on a series of resolutions and licenses.
Among the more substantial consent items is a proposed joint resolution with Bridgewater Township updating the orderly annexation agreement between the two communities, a document that guides how future growth may be managed at the city’s edge. The council will also consider support for a Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce building improvement grant, bids for the 2026 mill and overlay street project and Mill Towns State Trail improvements, and a proclamation naming April 2026 as Fair Housing Month.
Public hearings will be held on a new liquor license for Taco Terco, the restaurant that will soon open in the Froggy Bottoms location, followed by council action on the request. The regular agenda includes a first reading of an ordinance that would shift lodging tax collection responsibilities to the Minnesota Department of Revenue and a motion authorizing submission of a grant application for final design and construction planning related to removal of the Ames Mill Dam.
The meeting will conclude with reports from the mayor and council members and an update from the city administrator outlining upcoming agenda items.
