A free public screening of the documentary Join or Die will take place on Saturday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at the Viking Theater in Buntrock Commons on the campus of St. Olaf College.
Released in 2024, Join or Die examines the long-term decline of civic participation in the United States through the work of social scientist Robert Putnam, author of Bowling Alone. The film explores how changes in social habits and weakening community ties have shaped American civic life, from neighborhood organizations to democratic engagement.
Through interviews with scholars, elected officials and community leaders, the documentary highlights the real-world consequences of declining participation in clubs, faith groups and local organizations. It also makes the case that rebuilding social capital—defined as networks of trust, relationships and shared responsibility—is essential to strengthening communities and democracy.
Following the screening, audience members are invited to take part in a discussion and learn about opportunities to become involved with local organizations. Representatives from area groups will be available to share information about volunteer and civic engagement options. Light refreshments will be provided.
The event is hosted by the Rotary Club of Northfield, the Svoboda Center for Civic Engagement at St. Olaf College, the League of Women Voters of Northfield and Cannon Falls, and the Northfield Public Library, along with additional community partners.
Due to limited seating, advance registration is required. Attendees are asked to RSVP through the Northfield Public Library’s website.
