Northfield Council to Weigh Park Project Contract, Investment Oversight Proposal Tonight

By Rich Larson

Northfield City Council members are set to tackle a mix of routine business and bigger policy questions when they meet Tuesday night, with the agenda ranging from Earth Day recognition to park improvements, housing funding and city investment oversight.

The meeting opens with a presentation from the Earth Day Steering Committee, followed by a proclamation declaring April 25 as Earth Day in Northfield. Council members are also expected to approve a lengthy consent agenda that includes March 17 meeting minutes, more than $4.46 million in disbursements, temporary liquor licenses tied to upcoming community events, and renewals for lower-potency hemp edible retailers.

Among the notable consent items is a resolution transferring funds from the Housing and Redevelopment Authority to the Housing Trust Fund in order to meet matching requirements for a State of Minnesota Local Housing Trust Fund grant. The council is also scheduled to hold the second reading of an ordinance that would shift lodging tax administrative collection duties from the city finance department to the Minnesota Department of Revenue.

On the regular agenda, council members will consider accepting bids and awarding a contract for the 2026 Park Improvements Project, which includes work tied to Riverside Park, Dresden Hill and Central Park. They will also discuss whether to establish an ad hoc City Investment Policy and Cash Management Advisory Committee.

The meeting will conclude with reports from the mayor and council members and the city administrator’s update.

As always, the City Council and the Northfield City Staff are eager to hear the opinions of the public on any matter, whether the subject is on the Council agenda or not. Tonight’s meeting is a work session, so the Council will not hear from the public. However, those who do wish to make a point, air an opinion or ask a question, can email their councilor directly or make use of the eComment function which can be found in the “Agendas” section of the city website.

The meeting will begin tonight at 6pm.
