The best advice Rice County Sheriff’s Office Captain Nathan Budin offers outdoor enthusiasts is simple: tell someone where you’re going.
Budin shared that message last month with two classes at Northfield High School during an educational visit focused on boating and ATV safety. He told students that if someone is injured and unable to call for help, having a known destination can be critical for first responders.
The visit was funded by a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources grant that also supports ATV enforcement patrols now underway and a youth ATV safety class scheduled for June 11 at the Rice County Public Safety Center in Faribault.
Budin was joined by deputies Danielle Story, Colbey Hullett and Derek Estrem, who discussed their work and safety precautions. Hullett and Estrem, members of the Sheriff’s Dive Team, displayed their equipment, while Story showed students the team’s response vehicle.
Students were urged to wear life jackets, avoid the debris-filled Cannon River and adopt a safety-first mindset for all outdoor activities.
