Incoming Superintendent Dr. Tim Anderson Brings Student-Centered Vision to Northfield Schools

By Rich Larson

Dr. Tim Anderson will officially step into the role of Superintendent of Northfield Public Schools next week, bringing with him a deep personal connection to the district and a philosophy grounded in belonging, clarity, and student-centered design.

Selected from a competitive pool of 19 applicants, Anderson succeeds Dr. Matt Hillman, who is stepping down after 17 years to lead the Minnesota Association of School Administrators. Anderson said his appointment feels like a return home. A graduate of St. Olaf College, he began his career in Northfield classrooms and has maintained ties to the community ever since.

Anderson’s path into education was shaped early by family and mentors. His mother, an elementary school teacher, introduced him to literacy and the idea that education opens doors to opportunity and belonging. Teachers throughout his schooling reinforced values of integrity, leadership, and civic responsibility—principles that now define his leadership style.

“These things are prerequisites for success I’ve found in the field, but certainly in my own journey,” Anderson said. “My mother taught me the power of literacy as a gateway, and my teachers helped me understand integrity, leadership, and passion. Those experiences showed me that education is ultimately an act of civic stewardship.”

As superintendent, Anderson emphasizes designing systems that help every student discover purpose and potential. He aligns closely with the district’s vision of preparing students for lifelong success, particularly through fostering critical thinking and active citizenship.

“How do we set the conditions so that young people are producers and not just consumers?” Anderson said. “We start with a clear vision of what we want to become, then continually examine the gap between current reality and desired reality. I’m committed to designing systems that ensure every student finds their place—their unique gift to the world—and contributes meaningfully to the common wealth.”

Anderson also places a strong focus on school culture, saying students and staff should feel “happy and proud,” while experiencing dignity, belonging, and agency in their work and learning. He believes clarity in expectations and collaboration among educators are key drivers of success.

With his combination of local roots, classroom experience, and leadership background, Anderson said he is ready to build on Northfield’s long-standing tradition of excellence while guiding the district through its next chapter.
