With new court improvements completed at Riverside Park and membership continuing to climb, the Northfield Pickleball Association (NPA) is marking a season of growth while inviting residents to join a free community event later this month.
The organization announced several upgrades to the Riverside Pickleball Courts, including new perimeter fencing, additional seating, and new player amenities. A paddle rack, broom, and squeegee have been installed courtside, while an additional picnic table is being added near the court entrance.
The association said windscreens are also being planned for the newly installed fencing. Looking ahead, NPA leaders are working with the Riverside/Lions Long Range Planning Committee on potential future additions, including a paved seating area, shade structure, benches and a community bulletin board.
To recognize the city’s support for the improvements, NPA board members and local players plan to attend the July 7 Northfield City Council meeting to thank city officials and parks staff for their role in the fencing project.
The association will also host its second annual “Dinks & Drinks” summer social on July 15 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Riverside Pickleball Courts. The free event is open to the public and will include open play, refreshments, new NPA apparel and prize giveaways. Organizers say players of all skill levels, including first-timers, are welcome.
The local growth mirrors a national trend. According to the website Pickleheads.com, pickleball has been widely recognized as one of America’s fastest-growing sports in recent years, with participation surging across all age groups and communities nationwide. Recent industry reports estimate that millions of Americans now play the sport regularly, fueling demand for new courts and expanded recreational opportunities.
In Northfield, that momentum is evident. NPA membership has reached 208 players, and the organization recently launched a redesigned website, northfieldpickleball.org, featuring news, events and community resources.
Additional July events include the Pickle Paddle fundraiser on July 11 and an NPA round robin tournament for 3.5-level players on July 18.
