Northfield Shares Opens 2026 Community Grant Application Cycle

By Rich Larson

Northfield-area nonprofit organizations now have the opportunity to seek funding for projects designed to strengthen the community and improve residents’ quality of life.

Northfield Shares announced that applications for its 2026 community grant cycle opened July 1 and will remain available through Sept. 25. The organization is encouraging eligible nonprofits and community initiatives with a fiscal sponsor to apply for funding through its annual grant program.

According to Northfield Shares, grants are intended to support projects and programs that address community needs and contribute to a thriving community within the Northfield School District.

To be eligible, applicants must either be designated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or be fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3). Organizations also must serve residents within the geographic boundaries of the Northfield School District.

Applications will be reviewed by the Northfield Shares Grants Committee, which evaluates proposals based on eligibility, adherence to grant guidelines, project feasibility and available funding. The committee then forwards recommendations to the Northfield Shares Board of Directors for final approval.

Organizations seeking funding are asked to demonstrate how their projects align with the foundation’s mission, address a current community need, provide measurable outcomes, and contribute to long-term organizational or community growth. Other evaluation criteria include responsible financial management, collaboration with volunteers and community partners, commitment to equity, and plans for sustaining the project after the grant period ends.

Grant requests may range from a minimum of $500 to any amount above that, as the foundation does not impose a maximum request limit.

Northfield Shares also outlines several categories that are ineligible for funding, including political campaigns, for-profit organizations, lobbying efforts, capital campaigns, endowment campaigns, fundraising events, and projects that benefit only an individual or family. Funding will likewise not be provided for real estate purchases, previously incurred debt, basic municipal services, or sectarian religious programs.

Grant recipients will be announced in November, with funds scheduled for distribution before the end of 2026.

Application materials, guidelines, frequently asked questions and access to the online grant portal are available at northfieldshares.org. Organizations must submit proposals by 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 25.
