After more than four decades of teaching driver education, retired Northfield educator Kevin Dahle is receiving national recognition for his dedication to traffic safety.
Dahle, a driver’s education instructor for 43 years, including the past 33 years in Northfield, has been selected as a guest of the Governors Highway Safety Association at its national conference in Minneapolis this summer. His participation is sponsored through Minnesota’s Toward Zero Deaths program, a statewide initiative focused on reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
A former Northfield High School civics teacher and state senator, Dahle continues to teach driver’s education even in retirement. He said his passion remains helping young people learn how to navigate roads safely and develop the skills needed to become responsible drivers.
Throughout his career, Dahle has emphasized that driving is about much more than operating a vehicle. He teaches students to anticipate hazards, scan intersections, obey traffic laws and remain alert to pedestrians and other drivers. He also stresses the importance of avoiding the behaviors most commonly associated with traffic deaths, including distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving and failure to wear seat belts.
Dahle noted that while today’s vehicles are safer than ever, cell phones and in-car technology have created new distractions that drivers must learn to manage. He believes distracted driving has become one of the greatest challenges facing young motorists.
For students learning to drive, Dahle encourages patience and practice. He points out that every hour spent behind the wheel with a qualified adult helps build confidence and improve driving skills.
His advice for parents is equally straightforward: start simple. New drivers should begin in parking lots and quiet residential neighborhoods before gradually progressing to more complex traffic situations. By introducing challenges one step at a time, parents can help young drivers gain confidence while developing safe habits that will last a lifetime.
For generations of Northfield families, Dahle has been the calm voice in the passenger seat. His national recognition reflects a career dedicated to making Minnesota roads safer, one student at a time.
